I think there are a few basic needs that every person on Earth should have met regardless of where they live and how much money they have. I think safe and accessible drinking water trumps them all.
I lived in Northwest Africa for a total of about 2 years. Out of 4 of the countries I lived in none of them had safe water that I could drink from the tap. Two of the countries required me to use an expensive sand filtration device and for the other two I had to boil and/or filter the water before drinking it. As a working teacher I had the means to afford these expenses but for most people in those countries they often don’t have any choice but to drink what little water they have as is.
Since my experience in Africa I have heard of the organizations called “Charity: Water” and “Water.org.” The first one is great because 100% of proceeds go directly to the support of helping people find water. The second one was started by actor Matt Damon and former football player Gary White. According to their websites, over 10% of the world (780,000,000 people) are without access to clean water. Both organizations offer creative ways to make a one-time donation or give on a monthly basis.
