Yayoi Kusama Museum

Yayoi Kusama Museum

Recently, on a rainy afternoon, I ventured to the Yayoi Kusama Museum between Waseda and Kagurazaka stations. If you are unfamiliar with her, she’s an artist from Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture who in recent years has become famous worldwide for her dotted pumpkin sculptures. You might be asking yourself “Why pumpkins?” Well, as Kusama explained in a 2015 interview: “I love pumpkins because of their humorous form, warm feeling, and a human-like quality and form. My desire to create works of pumpkins still continues. I have enthusiasm as if I were still a child.”

Above is a picture from inside Yayoi Kusama’s “All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins” infinity mirror room installation. It really did feel as if the luminous yellow and black pumpkins were multiplying around me.
